Crickets

Not having new stuff in stores for a long stretch feels very unnerving.

The last new book I had was final issue of ‘Advent Rising’, limping into shops late last year. As things fall, it looks like the first issue of ‘The Revenant’ won’t be out until early next year.

Makes me wonder what I’ve been doing?

Truth is, I’ve been doing quite a bit.

I wrote three children’s storybooks which will come out late in 2008. I wrote the screenplay (Codename: 3D), which is still giving me good vibes. I wrote a second ‘Heir to Fire’ book. I wrote and produced 10 pages of new comic I’m pitching around (Codename: Hot Rod) with local superstar Marc Nischan.

Still…those damn crickets keep singing their damned cricket songs.

Comic-Con-Crazy

Heading out to Comic-Con in San Diego this week.

For me, things are more hectic this year than every before. I’m wearing two hats: that of comic-book writer (pitching and promoting projects) and Editor/journalist of the newly-revitalized Comics2Film.

If you’re coming out to the show find me at the Actionopolis booth #2103.

We’ll be selling “Heir to Fire” and the other great Actionopolis books at low, low, crazy-low Comic-con prices!

We’ll be handing out postcards for “The Revenant”.

I’ve got a 10-page preview book (for now I’m referring to it as Codename: Hot Rod) that I’ll be handing out to editors and publishers, but ask me about it if you want a sneak peek at this cool new book.

Lots of pitches, interviews, after hours stuff…maybe Jonah Weiland will even let me board the CBR pirate ship.

See ya out there!

Borders book signing

You get three Actionopolis creators for the price of one at this event!

I, along with fellow actionistas Dan Mishkin (The Forest King) and Gary Reed (Spirit of the Samruai) will be celebrating “Kids Reading Month” with a store appearance at Borders in Troy, MI on Saturday, March 24th.

The signing will begin at 2pm.

Borders is located inside the Oakland Mall at the intersection of I-75 and 14 mile road.

School Library Journal gives “Heir to Fire” a thumbs up

Heir to Fire: Gila Flats (Book 1)...Coming September 20th!

The January issue of the prestigious “School Library Journal” posted a review of “Heir to Fire” and “The Forest King” (by Dan Mishkin and Tom Mandrake).

Elaine E. Knight of Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL writes:

Gr 5?8 In ["The Forest King"], the forest monster is legendary among the kids in Justin’s New England town, and they play a game mocking the creature. Justin, however, feels sure that there is something truly evil in the woods. He’s seen the moving shadows and the yellow eyes glaring out from the trees. He wonders about the odd path of iron rods-and he believes that he is destined to confront the fiend-and whatever is behind it.

In ["Heir to Fire"], Ryan, 14, just wants to fit in, but odd things keep happening. Ice cream completely melts in his hands, and unexpected fires ignite when he is near. When his parents reveal that he was found abandoned in the desert as a baby, he begins to understand that he is not from Earth. He dreams of his home world, long ago taken over by the evil Arachnovar. His best friend becomes possessed by a weird spiderlike creature, leading Ryan to discover that extraterrestrials are hunting him. To save the town from being taken over, Ryan must recover the ancient powers of the Fire Prince-or die trying.

Although written in full-text style, both books show a graphic-novel influence-episodic, action-driven plots; highly visual descriptive imagery; and dramatic dialogue. The comic-book background is also evident in the heavily shadowed illustrations and dramatic cover art. These high-energy texts and engaging characters will attract reluctant readers as well as fantasy fans.

Check it out…

“Heir to Fire” gets a MANLY thumbs up!

Heir to Fire: Gila Flats (Book 1)...Coming September 20th!

It’s always nice when someone has a kind word about your work. It’s even better when it’s a MANLY kind word. Such is the case with the latest mention of “Heir to Fire” in Beau Smith’s Busted Knuckles column at Silver Bullet Comicbooks. Says Smith:

“Heir To Fire is a great little hardcover book that’s filled with action, prose and chapter illustrations that let you know that the picture in your head is on the right path. This very cool hardcover…is a manly recommendation of Busted Knuckles.”

Thanks, Beau!
