Motor City Comic-Con

I attended Motor City Comic-Con this past weekend. It was only my second convention as a guest/exhibitor, but my first time manning a table at a “big” show.

Motor City tends to be more of a nostalgic TV/media event (with the primary guests being folks like Adam West, Burt Ward, Brent Spiner and so on) and comics taking a backseat. I’d prefer it if they’d retool the show to be a comic-con like it was in the old day, but who listens to me?

Anyhow, Actionopolis and Komikwerks had a table set up there, adjoining with Desperado and Tranzfusion. Gary Reed who is a partner in all four ventures) set up the row for us and manned the station.

Dan Mishkin, (who wrote The Forest King) was there at the table, doing a great ringmaster impersonation, reeling in every kid, parent, teacher or otherwise potentially interested party within 20 feet and engaging them in breezy conversation.

Dan was easily the fan favorite at the table and I was amazed by how many Blue Devil (or “Blued Evil”, as Dan corrected) fans came up to see how he felt about the new revival of the character (he likes it).

Paul Storrie was there all weekend showing off the first sketches from his Actionopolis book “Valkyra”. His artist collaborator Storn Cook put in a brief appearance as well.

Highlights of the weekend included a raid on the event by RIAA, MPAA and Novi Police(!)…seeing Billy Tucci, World Famous Justin and the all-round-nice-guy Matt Busch (who seems to be embroiled in some kind of tabloid-esque love triangle of late)…meeting many cool folks, like Rafael Nieves and his artist partner Tony, Jason Howard, Joe Michael Linsner and the dude who draws “Mouse Guard”, to name (or not name) a few.

I even took some photos which are on the Actionopolis website! Click-click!
