Halloween Comics

Around this time last year I had a letter published in Comics Buyers’ Guide discussing my annual tradition of giving away comics on Halloween. The letter encouraged publishers to support this activity by producing low-cost comics in October that people like me could pick up cheap and distribute to impressionable youths.

The letter sparked a flurry of conversation in the “Oh So?” letter column of that magazine, but there was no actual response from the publishers. That is, comic publishers did nothing to make free, 10-cent or 25-cent comics available in October for Halloween distribution.

Never the less, I planned ahead and am well prepared for All Hallowed Free Comic Day. I’ve got a bunch of the 10-cent “Superman” and FCBD “Ultimate X-Men” for older kids, the FCBD “Leave it to Chance” for girls, the FCBD “Batman Adventures” and “Transformers: Armada” for younger kids and the FCBD “Donald Duck Adventures” for the really little ones. There’s an assortment of other odds and ends at the ready as well.

I’ve got about 50 comics altogether, which is plenty considering I’ll have about 12 Halloween beggars come by.

The kids go nuts when they see these things too. The first year I did it I was kind of worried, but by the end of the night I had some kids making a special trip over and other kids sneaking around for a second helping.

Halloween is a couple weeks off and it’s not too late to get your comics ready! Check out your local store: they’ve probably got a 25-cent bin filled with an assortment of titles that would work. It may even be possible to get your local comic dealer to secure a quantity of comics from the free comic book day publishers for you. Maybe your own collection needs to be pared down a bit?

The kids are coming! Let?s rot their minds this year instead of their teeth!
