ThePullBox.com calls 'Revenant' a "thrill ride"

By Rob Worley on Jul 16, 2008 | In The Revenant | Send feedback »

ThePullBox read 'The Revenant' ...and loved it!

The book is a thrill ride… page to page action! The break-neck pacing is supported by some beautiful art that pops in all the right ways… from urban landscapes to decapitations, every page is on the money. This book is like the Sopranos meets the X-files with and integration of classic pulps that does nothing but enhance everything present. The Revenant is a great mixture of genres and Mat Santolouco’s art is almost a genetic match for Rob Worley’s plot.

Grade: no-brainer A

'The Revenant' is coming

By Rob Worley on Jun 25, 2008 | In The Revenant | Send feedback »

Alert your local retailer!

My new graphic novel 'The Revenant' is in the latest Diamond Catalog (JUL08 3913). This is the graphic novel from Desperado Publishing.

The bad men of Sapphire City have forgotten what it means to be
afraid, rising to power by ruthlessly cutting down the innocent. Now,
on the eve of the city's Day of the Dead celebration, one long thought
buried has returned, a ghoulish gunslinger called The Revenant.

I wrote the book from a concept and story by Keith Giffen and Shannon Eric Denton.

Mat Santolouco made the art.

Big Chris Wood has the colors.

Ed Dukeshire's doing the letters.

The whole shebang is 112 pages for $14.99! Order yours today! (JUL08 3913)

I {heart} Crazy Sushi

By Rob Worley on May 12, 2008 | In Blah blah | Send feedback »

Some time last year I ventured over to Crazy Sushi. It's walking distance from my house and I love the makizushi.

As I watched Lee prepare my first order, I immediately recognized the guy was a kung fu master with a black belt in the fish and rice arts. Although the restaurant was new, the walls were already graced with a handful of hand-made works of art...expressions of affections by his growing customer base.

I decided to join the tradition of creating art for the restaurant, so I doodled a drawing on the back of one of the order forms as I waited.

By the time Lee finished creating my dinner I had finished my pencil drawing: a sketch of an intense-looking, muscled-out, guitar hero of a fish, griding away on his undersea axe, which was wired up to an oyster-shell amp. Above "Rock Fish's" head were the words: CRAZY SUSHI RAWX!!.

Crazy Sush Rawx!!

Imagine my surprise when, just last week, Lee hands me his new business cards. Apparently the Rock Fish (or is it Rawk Fish?) is now part of the store's official logo!!

The art will be used on store T-Shirts as well.

I am, of course, extremely honored, and I stand by the proclamation of that particular drawing: Crazy Sushi in Madison Heights does, in fact, RAWK!

I keep tellin' ya...

Thanks to Comics Continuum for previewing the book.

'Serenity' star recommends 'Heir to Fire'

By Rob Worley on Jan 21, 2008 | In Heir to Fire | 1 feedback »

I found out last week that 'Serenity'/'Firefly' star Nathan Fillion has kinda sorta recommended my book 'Heir to Fire' as a good chapter book for reluctant readers.

Here's the scoop: Fillion and his friend, novelist P.J. Haarsma have a non-profit concern going called Kids Need to Read (KNTR) which is committed to donating books to libraries with the goal of engaging kids.

Heir to Fire

The organization has placed 'Heir to Fire' and the other six Actionopolis books on their official list of worthy books for 2008.

That's not all. KNTR is setting up shop at the Phoenix Cactus Comicon this weekend.

They'll have a discussion panel on Saturday, January 26 at 12:00 PM with PJ Haarsma and their website states: "members of our audience who ask us a question will receive a free book (while quantities last)."

Listed among the free books is 'Heir to Fire' along with the other six Actionopolis titles, as well as many other fine books.

The Revenant Strikes! Grunts Attack!

By Rob Worley on Dec 30, 2007 | In About Writing, The Revenant | Send feedback »

Time for some shameless self-promotion, dear readers.

Please go gather up your Diamond Comics Catalog. The one you picked up on Friday, when the new comics blew into town. Go ahead...I'll wait.

...

Very good, then. Flip to Page 147 and you'll see my new comic book, available for pre-order from your local comics shop right now. It's called The Revenant (JAN08 2052) and its a supernatural tale of crime and severe, brutal punishment as a gunslinging ghost visits unholy revenge on the gangsters that wronged him.

I wrote the book from a story and concept by none other than Keith Giffen and Shannon Eric Denton (the guys who brought you "10" and "Zapt!"). Mateus Santolouco provides the artwork and the stunning covers! It's published by Image under Jim Valentino's Shadowline imprint.

It's been savage, fun to work on and I hope you'll dig it too! Go to TheRevenantComic.com for more info and previews and all the latest news. Then bug your comics shop retailer and be sure to give them the ordering code: JAN082052.

But wait! There's more!

Another book that needs some hype is the Grunts (JAN08 3356) TPB found on page 218 of the catalog.

This is a collection of the Arcana Comics mini-series written (once again) by Giffen and Denton and illustrated by "Mad" Matt Jacobs.

Ignore the solicitation copy in the catalog. The page count is actually around 180 pages (not 100 as stated in the catalog), which is an awesome value for $14.95. The entire paragraph is an inexplicable misprint. Instead, read it as:

During World War Two, an American squad encounters a German superhuman assault squad and starts a Eugenics Race that carries into present day.

Now, the reason for the hype is: the TPB is like a super-deluxe edition DVD, jam-packed with extra material! We're not talking about a few pinups or a printed script.

Nope. Instead you get over a dirty half-dozen new stories featuring America's fighting men, including one written by me! Other great writers contributing to the book include Marc Bernardin/Adam Freeman (The Highwaymen), Kevin Grevioux (New Warriors), Christopher E. Long (Easy Way), Dwight MacPherson (Archibald Saves Christmas), Howard Wong (After The Cape) and Mike Bullock (Lions, Tigers, and Bears) to name a few.

We all ran Matt Jacobs ragged coming up with new tales for him to illustrate. The guy's a machine!

The diamond code for this jam-packed bad boy is JAN08 3356.

Both books are due out in March, but you want to ask for them now to make sure they'll be in stock!

Books, Books, Books

A trio of children's story books I wrote earlier in the year are now available for pre-order on Amazon (and everywhere else books are sold).

Wizard of OzPuss in BootsMedusa

The titles are Wizard of OZ, Puss in Boots and Medusa, all adapted from classic works.

My "Heir to Fire" collaborator Mike Dubisch illustrated each of them and they are digitally colored. The books have library binding, hence the increased price.

New zenphoto in the wild!

By Rob Worley on Nov 3, 2007 | In Tech Talk | 2 feedbacks »

zenphoto just released the long-awaited upgrade to their promising photo hosting software.

When I started this site I used Menalto's Gallery software and eventually graduated to their Gallery 2 system. That package is the be-all, end-all of photo management software with every conceivable feature you could want...which was kind of why I stopped loving it. It was slow and bloated, and a resource pig that was causing my host to have headaches. And I didn't want 90% of the features provided.

zenphoto inhabits the opposite end of design ideology: lean, fast and quiet. Seemed like the perfect remedy to the G2-blues.

Shortly after I switched, I was disappointed to learn that the zenphoto project had gone dormant. It was developed by a single individual (a hard-working guy named Tristan). When big career opportunities came up he had to stop working on zen. I wasn't sure we'd ever see an update.

However, the software is so well-loved that a community had formed and would not let it die out. Tristan recruited a willing development team and voila...today we have a hot new version!

Check out my zenphoto gallery.

It's cool software, with web 2.0 niceties like inline editing of image titles and descriptions, drag-and-drop album sorting and so on. The new version has sub-albums, RSS feeds, anti-spam commenting, tagging and more. The theming process is pretty easy to master if you're a CSS-oriented designer.

To be fair, there are a few less-awesome aspects: the install process isn't exactly the guided, friendly type install that Word Press users (for example) are used to. I'm also not a fan of the completely automated thumbnailing (would be cool if a future version lets you manually select the area of a photo that's to appear in the thumbnail). Sub-album management seems to work best through FTP. None of these quibbles are really major detractors for me, and since the software's actively being developed again, I'm hopeful that some of these rough edges may be smoothed in future releases.

Overall it's a hot, standards-compliant bit of open source that's worth a download.

Crickets

By Rob Worley on Aug 31, 2007 | In Heir to Fire, CN: 3D, CN: Hot Rod, The Revenant | Send feedback »

Not having new stuff in stores for a long stretch feels very unnerving.

The last new book I had was final issue of 'Advent Rising', limping into shops late last year. As things fall, it looks like the first issue of 'The Revenant' won't be out until early next year.

Makes me wonder what I've been doing?

Truth is, I've been doing quite a bit.

I wrote three children's storybooks which will come out late in 2008. I wrote the screenplay (Codename: 3D), which is still giving me good vibes. I wrote a second 'Heir to Fire' book. I wrote and produced 10 pages of new comic I'm pitching around (Codename: Hot Rod) with local superstar Marc Nischan.

Still...those damn crickets keep singing their damned cricket songs.
